Combining history and technology to preserve Scotland's written heritage

The National Archives of Scotland (NAS) uses the Scottish Documents website to carry out testing for online access to digital images of historical records.

Log in for online church records testing
Staff in Church of Scotland presbyteries and local archive services in Scotland are currently testing the site.

If you are one of the testers, log in to the project partners' area.

Wills and testaments online
Scottish Documents was launched in July 2003 by the NAS, as part of the Scottish Archive Network (SCAN) project. The project funded the digitisation and preservation of over 520,000 Scottish wills and testaments.

Remote access to digital images
Pioneering digital capture from original records
The NAS is currently digitising more Scottish historical records, including those of kirk sessions, presbyteries, synods and the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Supporting research through online access

The project will open up access to historical records on a huge scale, by making digital copies of the records available in a larger number of places in Scotland and eventually worldwide via the Internet. Read more about our current digitisation programme and see a timetable for online access of the church records.
